Automatic Transcriptions for Audio and Video Items

Automatic Transcriptions for Audio and Video Items

Overview

Automatic transcriptions bring AI-powered accessibility to your audio and video content. When you upload or record media in Learn Amp, the platform automatically generates a time-stamped transcript—making it easier for learners to follow along, search for specific moments, and engage with content in their preferred way.

This feature enhances accessibility for all users, particularly those who are deaf, hard of hearing, or prefer reading to watching.

Functionality Breakdown

When Transcriptions Are Created

Transcriptions are automatically generated when a new Item is created that includes audio or video content. This applies whether the media is:

  • Uploaded directly to Learn Amp

  • Recorded within the platform

Once the media has finished uploading, the system begins generating the transcript automatically. The time taken depends on the file size and processing requirements.

Viewing Transcripts

Once generated, transcripts are accessible via a clickable icon alongside the media player:

  • Click the transcript icon to open the transcript panel

  • Toggle the panel open or closed as needed

  • The transcript appears in the original language of the media

  • Content is time-stamped based on AI-determined intervals

Interacting with Transcripts

Jumping to specific moments:

  • Click any timestamp within the transcript to jump directly to that point in the media

  • Playback starts automatically from the selected moment

Searching within the transcript:

  • Use the search box to find specific words or phrases

  • All matching instances are highlighted

  • Navigate between matches using the up/down arrows

  • The currently selected match appears in a darker highlight

FAQs

Q: Are existing videos automatically transcribed?
No. Automatic transcriptions currently apply only to newly created audio or video Items. Existing content is not retroactively transcribed.

Q: Can transcripts be translated into other languages?
Transcriptions are generated in the language spoken in the media. Translation is not currently supported, though this may change in future updates.

Q: Can I search for transcript content using Learn Amp's main search?
Not currently. Transcripts do not feed into Learn Amp's global search functionality. You can search within the transcript panel when viewing content.

Q: How long does transcription take?
Processing time depends on the file size. Most transcriptions complete within a few minutes of the media finishing upload.

Q: Is our data used to train AI models?
No. Learn Amp has a contractual agreement with our transcription provider (AssemblyAI) that explicitly prevents data from being used for model training. Your content remains confidential.

Q: Where is transcription data processed?
All processing is handled through services located in Ireland, EU, ensuring compliance with UK and European data protection regulations.

Q: How long is data retained by the transcription service?
Learn Amp has implemented Zero Data Retention (ZDR). Voice recordings and generated transcripts are instantly deleted from the processing servers once transcription completes.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Solution

Issue

Solution

Transcript icon not appearing

Ensure the media has finished processing. Large files may take longer. Refresh the page after a few minutes.

Transcript is incomplete or inaccurate

AI transcription accuracy depends on audio quality. Clear speech and minimal background noise produce better results.

Transcript not generated for uploaded content

Verify the Item was newly created. Existing Items updated with new media may not trigger automatic transcription.

Search not finding known words

Check spelling and try alternative terms. The search matches exact text in the transcript.

Timestamps seem incorrect

Timestamp intervals are AI-determined. Minor variations are normal. Click nearby timestamps to find the right moment.
