Importing Skills: Managing Proficiency Levels
Overview
Importing skills allows you to quickly populate your skills library using a CSV file. This is especially useful when migrating from another system, setting up a new organisation, or adding a large number of skills at once.
The import process supports skill names, descriptions, categories, and proficiency level definitions—giving you flexibility to build a comprehensive taxonomy in bulk.

FAQs
Q: What file format is required?
CSV (comma-separated values) with UTF-8 encoding.
Q: Will importing overwrite existing skills?
No. Skills with matching names are skipped. The import only creates new skills.
Q: Can I update existing skills via import?
Currently, the import creates new skills only. To update existing skills, edit them individually in Manage Skills.
Q: What happens if my CSV has categories that don't exist?
They'll be created automatically. This is a quick way to set up both skills and categories at once.
Q: Is there a limit to how many skills I can import?
There's no strict limit, but very large imports (thousands of skills) may take longer to process.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
Import failing at upload | Check your CSV is properly formatted with UTF-8 encoding. Ensure it's not empty. |
Skills not appearing after import | Imported skills are disabled by default. Enable them in Manage Skills. |
Duplicate skill errors | Skills with the same name already exist. Rename or remove duplicates from your CSV. |
Categories not being assigned | Ensure category names in your CSV match exactly, including capitalisation. |
Custom level descriptions not showing | Verify your columns are correctly mapped during the import process. |
