Exercise Task Recurrence

Exercise Task Recurrence

Overview

This article explains what happens to exercise attempts when the related task recurs. Understanding this behaviour ensures Admins and Managers avoid confusion around expired attempts and learner visibility.

Functionality Breakdown

When a task recurs or is reissued using the setting:
"If learner has completed this content, ask them to complete it again", the previous attempt is marked as expired.

An expired attempt:

  • No longer appears on the learner's current task view

  • Cannot be scored by a Manager or Admin

  • Remains visible in the learner's profile and the exercise log for auditing

This ensures the learner completes the content again as intended, without duplication or overlap.

Pre-requisites

  • The task must be configured to recur or reissue

  • The setting "Ask them to complete it again" must be enabled

  • A completed exercise attempt must exist from a previous cycle

Required User Roles

You must have one of the following roles to configure recurring tasks and view exercise expiry behaviour:

  • Admin or Owner – Full access to all features

  • Reporter – Can configure tasks and score exercises

  • HR – Can configure tasks and score exercises (with assessment override)

  • Learning Designer – Can configure tasks (with override) and score exercises

  • Manager – Can configure tasks for their team and score exercises they can sign off

Note: Some roles (e.g. Curator, Learning Designer) may require additional permission overrides configured at the company level to access certain task management features.

Quick Start Guide

  1. Configure the task for recurrence

    • Navigate to Manage → Compliance → Tasks in the sidebar navigation

    • Edit or create a task

    • Enable recurrence and select "Ask them to complete it again"

  2. Understand how attempts are expired

    • When the task recurs, any existing completed attempts for linked exercises are marked as expired

  3. Check the status of past attempts

    • Navigate to Manage → Learning Content → Exercises → Score Exercises in the sidebar navigation

    • Use filters to review attempt history and statuses

FAQs

Q: What does "expired" mean for a learner?
A: The previous submission disappears from their task list. They must submit a new attempt to complete the new task instance.

Q: Can I still view expired attempts?
A: Yes. Expired attempts are still listed on the learner's profile and in the exercise log, but they can no longer be scored.

Q: Do learners get notified when their attempt expires?
A: No. Expiry is passive. The new task reappears and requires a new submission.

Q: What happens to scores from expired attempts?
A: Scores from expired attempts are preserved in the exercise log and learner profile for historical reporting, but they don't affect the new task instance.

Q: Can I prevent attempts from expiring?
A: If you don't want attempts to expire, don't enable "Ask them to complete it again" when configuring task recurrence. The task will recur, but previous completions will remain valid.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Solution

Issue

Solution

Learner sees no previous attempt

This is expected if the task was set to "Ask them to complete it again" — their prior attempt was expired. Check the exercise log or learner profile to view historical attempts.

Attempt not visible to scorer

Expired attempts cannot be scored. Check if recurrence logic triggered expiry. Navigate to Manage → Learning Content → Exercises → Score Exercises in the sidebar navigation to view current (non-expired) submissions.

Submission history unclear

Use the exercise log or learner profile to view full submission history, including expired attempts. Navigate to Manage → Learning Content → Exercises in the sidebar navigation and open the exercise to view its log.

Task recurring but attempts not expiring

Verify that "Ask them to complete it again" is enabled in the task recurrence settings. Navigate to Manage → Compliance → Tasks in the sidebar navigation to check task configuration.
