Linking a Scoring Rubric to an Exercise
Overview
Scoring Rubrics must be linked to Exercises to be used for grading learner submissions. Once linked, the rubric provides a structured framework for reviewers to assess qualitative responses such as free-text answers, uploaded videos, or creative tasks.
A single rubric can be reused across multiple exercises, making it easy to maintain consistent grading criteria across similar assessments.
Functionality Breakdown
When you link a Scoring Rubric to an Exercise:
The rubric becomes available when scoring learner submissions for that exercise
Reviewers see the rubric grid when grading responses
Scores are calculated based on the rubric's quality levels and point values
Pass/fail status can be automatically determined if a pass score is configured
Scoring Type Options
When creating or editing an exercise, you can choose from different scoring types:
Pass/Fail – Simple binary assessment without a rubric
Simple Scoring – Basic point-based scoring
Scoring Assessment – Uses a Scoring Rubric for structured grading (this is the option that links a rubric)
No Assessment – No scoring required
Completion Types with Rubrics
Exercises using Scoring Rubrics support several completion behaviours:
Any Submission – Learner completes upon submitting, regardless of score
Submission Scored – Learner completes once their submission has been scored
Pass Score – Learner completes only when their score meets or exceeds the defined pass threshold
Pre-requisites
To link a Scoring Rubric to an Exercise, you need:
An existing Scoring Rubric (not archived)
Permission to create or edit Exercises
One of the following roles:
Owner – Full access within their company
Admin – Administrative access within their company
Learning Designer – Can create and manage learning content
Curator – Can curate and manage content
Quick Start Guide
Linking a Rubric When Creating a New Exercise
In the top navigation bar, click the + icon
Select Assessment, then choose Exercise
Complete the basic exercise details (name, description, etc.)
In the Scoring section, select Scoring Assessment as the scoring type
A dropdown will appear—select the Scoring Rubric you want to use
Configure additional settings:
Pass Score (optional) – Set a minimum score for passing
Completion Type – Choose when the learner is marked complete
Show Scoring – Decide if learners can see their rubric scores
Complete the remaining exercise setup
Save and publish the exercise
Linking a Rubric to an Existing Exercise
Go to Assess > Exercises
Find the exercise you want to modify
Click to edit the exercise
Navigate to the Scoring settings
Change the scoring type to Scoring Assessment
Select the Scoring Rubric from the dropdown
Configure pass score and completion settings as needed
Save your changes
Unlinking a Rubric from an Exercise
Edit the exercise
Change the scoring type to a different option (Pass/Fail, Simple Scoring, or No Assessment)
Save the exercise
Note: Unlinking a rubric does not delete existing scores—historical data is preserved.
Using Pass Scores with Rubrics
When you set a pass score for an exercise using a Scoring Rubric:
The pass score represents the minimum total points required to pass
Total points are calculated by summing the point values for each selected quality level across all topic areas
If the learner's score meets or exceeds the pass score, their submission is marked as Passed
If the score falls below the pass score, their submission is marked as Failed
Example: If your rubric has 3 topic areas and a maximum of 10 points per area (30 total), you might set a pass score of 18 (60%).
FAQs
Q: Can I use the same rubric for multiple exercises?
Yes. Once created, a Scoring Rubric can be linked to any number of exercises. This is useful for maintaining consistent grading criteria.
Q: What happens if I edit a rubric that's linked to exercises?
Editing a rubric may be restricted once it's in use to maintain data consistency. If changes are needed, consider duplicating the rubric and linking the new version to new exercises.
Q: Can learners see their rubric scores?
This depends on the Show Scoring setting on the exercise. When enabled, learners can see their scores and the rubric criteria.
Q: What happens to existing scores if I unlink a rubric?
Existing scores are preserved. The historical data remains accessible for reporting purposes.
Q: Why don't I see my rubric in the dropdown?
Ensure the rubric is not archived and has been fully published. Only active, published rubrics appear in the selection dropdown.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
Rubric not appearing in dropdown | Check that the rubric is published and not archived. |
Can't change to Scoring Assessment | Ensure you have edit permissions for the exercise. |
Pass score not working | Verify you've selected Pass Score as the completion type, not just set a pass score value. |
Scores not calculating correctly | Check that the rubric has point values assigned to all quality levels. |
Learner can't see scores | Enable Show Scoring in the exercise settings. |
