Configuring the Skills Framework
Overview
The Skills Framework in Learn Amp defines how skills are rated across your organisation. It's the foundation that ensures consistency when learners self-rate, managers provide feedback, and teams compare skill levels.
By configuring your framework thoughtfully, you create a shared language for development conversations and more meaningful skill data across your platform.
Functionality Breakdown
The Skills Framework consists of two main elements:
Rating Scale
Define the number of rating levels (typically 1–5, but configurable up to 10)
Set labels for each level (e.g., Novice, Developing, Competent, Proficient, Expert)
Add summary descriptions that explain what each level means
Field Mapping
When you update your rating scale, you can map existing ratings to new labels. This ensures historical data remains meaningful even as your framework evolves.
Key Benefits
Consistency – Everyone uses the same scale and definitions
Clarity – Descriptions help users rate accurately
Flexibility – Adapt the framework to match your organisation's language
Customisation – Define level meanings per skill for greater precision

Configuring Rating Options
Step 1: Set Up Your Rating Scale
Review the existing labels and summaries in the table
For each level, you can:
Edit the label (e.g., change "Beginner" to "Novice")
Edit the summary to describe what this level means
Delete levels you don't need
Reorder levels by dragging them
Add new levels (up to 10 maximum)
Click Next when you're satisfied with your scale
💡 Tip: Keep descriptions concise but meaningful. Users will see these when rating skills, so clarity is essential.
Step 2: Map Existing Ratings
If you've changed your rating scale, you'll need to map existing records:
The system shows your previous labels and your new labels
For each old label, select which new label it should map to
This ensures existing skill ratings are preserved under the new structure
Click Next to apply the mapping
Step 3: Confirm Changes
Review your updated framework
Click Done to save
You'll see a confirmation that skill ratings have been updated
⚠️ Warning: Changing your rating scale affects all existing ratings. Plan your framework carefully before making changes, and communicate updates to your users.

4 | Proficient | Deep expertise. Can handle complex situations and mentor others. |
5 | Expert | Mastery level. Recognised authority who can lead and innovate. |
FAQs
Q: How many rating levels can I have?
You can have up to 10 rating levels in your framework. Most organisations use 4–6 levels for a good balance between precision and simplicity.
Q: What happens to existing ratings when I change the framework?
Existing ratings are mapped to your new labels during the update process. No data is lost—it's simply relabelled according to your mapping choices.
Q: Can I change the framework after users have started rating?
Yes, but do so carefully. Changes affect all existing ratings, so communicate updates to your organisation and consider the timing.
Q: Do all skills use the same rating scale?
Yes, the framework applies to all skills. However, you can define custom proficiency level descriptions per skill to give more specific meaning to each level for that particular skill.
Q: Can I preview how the scale looks to users before saving?
The update wizard shows you the scale as you build it. Take time at each step to review before proceeding.
Q: What if I want different scales for different skill types?
The platform uses a single rating scale, but you can use custom proficiency descriptions per skill to differentiate how levels are interpreted for different skills.
