Coach vs Team Manager
The key difference is scope:
Aspect | Coach | Team Manager |
|---|---|---|
Assigned to | Specific individuals | Entire team + sub-teams |
Permissions scope | Only coached users | All team members |
Typical use | Mentoring, onboarding buddies | Line management |
Number of people | Usually 1-5 individuals | Often 5-50+ |
Team structure | Independent of teams | Follows team hierarchy |
Example: A senior developer might coach 3 junior developers from different teams, while also being a Team Manager for the "Backend Team".

FAQs
Q: Does becoming a Coach change my core role?
No. Coach is an additional permission layer. A Learner who becomes a Coach still has Learner-level platform access, plus coaching capabilities for their assigned individuals.
Q: How many people can I coach?
There's no system limit, but consider your capacity. Coaching is most effective with manageable numbers—typically 1-10 individuals depending on intensity.
Q: Can I coach someone from a different team?
Yes. Coach relationships are independent of team structure. You can coach anyone in the organisation regardless of which team they're in.
Q: Do I see my coachees in team reports?
Coaches have separate reporting scopes. You'll see coached users in your coaching reports, separate from any team management reports (if you're also a Team Manager).
Q: What's the difference between a Coach and a Mentor?
In Learn Amp, "Coach" is the official term for this relationship. If your organisation uses "Mentor" terminology, the Coach feature serves this purpose.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
Coach can't see assigned user | Verify the coach assignment is saved in the user's profile |
Coach can't access reports | Check that the user is actively assigned (not just historically) |
Coach seeing entire team | This suggests Team Manager assignment—check if they should have both roles |
Can't find Coach field | Ensure you have Admin, Owner, or HR role to edit user details |
