Completion Settings

Completion Settings

Overview

Completion Settings determine how Learn Amp tracks when a learner has finished an Item. Choosing the right completion method ensures accurate progress reporting and appropriate learner expectations—whether you want learners to self-certify, have completion tracked automatically, or let an e-learning package control the process.

The completion method you choose affects how progress appears in reports, when certificates are awarded, and how Tasks are marked complete.

Functionality Breakdown

Completion Methods

Learn Amp offers three ways to track Item completion:

Manual Completion

Learners click a "Mark as Complete" button to indicate they've finished:

  • Best for: Articles, external weblinks, reference materials, PDFs

  • Learner control: Learner decides when they're done

  • Trust-based: Assumes learner has engaged with the content

  • Flexible: Works with any content type

How it works:

  1. Learner views the Item

  2. When finished, they click "Mark as Complete"

  3. Completion is recorded immediately

Automatic Completion

The Item is marked complete as soon as the learner accesses it:

  • Best for: Quick reference materials, awareness content, simple acknowledgements

  • No action required: Completion triggers on first view

  • Immediate: Records completion instantly

  • Simple: No learner interaction needed beyond viewing

How it works:

  1. Learner opens the Item

  2. System automatically records completion

  3. No further action required

⚠️ Warning: Use automatic completion carefully. It assumes viewing equals completing, which may not be appropriate for in-depth learning content.

Externally Controlled (E-learning)

The e-learning package (SCORM, xAPI, AICC, CMI5) determines completion:

  • Best for: Interactive courses, assessments, structured e-learning modules

  • Package-driven: Completion criteria defined in the course

  • Score tracking: Can require minimum scores for completion

  • Detailed progress: Tracks slides viewed, time spent, quiz results

How it works:

  1. Learner launches the e-learning package

  2. Package tracks progress internally

  3. When package criteria are met, completion is sent to Learn Amp

  4. Learn Amp records the completion and any associated score

  4. Save your changes

💡 Tip: Test your e-learning package thoroughly to ensure completion signals are sent correctly to Learn Amp.

Completion Notifications

Regardless of completion method, you can configure notifications:

  1. Go to the Completion step when editing an Item

  2. Under Notifications, configure who should be notified when learners complete:

    • No one – No notifications sent

    • Manager – Learner's line manager receives notification

    • Coach – Learner's assigned coach receives notification

    • Specific users – Choose individual users to notify

  3. Save your changes

Notifications are sent via email and appear in the recipient's notification centre.

How Completion Affects Other Features

Tasks

When an Item is assigned via a Task:

  • Manual/Automatic: Task completes when Item completion is recorded

  • Externally Controlled: Task completes when e-learning package sends completion

Certificates

If auto-assign certificate is enabled:

  • Certificate is awarded immediately upon completion

  • Works with all completion methods

CPD Points

If CPD points are configured:

  • Points are awarded upon completion

  • Recorded against the learner's CPD record

Learnlists

When an Item is part of a Learnlist:

  • Item completion contributes to Learnlist progress

  • Learnlist completes when all required Items are complete

FAQs

Q: Can I change the completion method after learners have started?
Yes, but be cautious. Changing methods doesn't affect existing completions but may confuse learners mid-progress.

Q: What if a learner accidentally clicks Mark as Complete?
Admins can reset completion via the Activity Log. The learner can also contact support.

Q: Does automatic completion work for e-learning packages?
No, e-learning packages always use Externally Controlled completion to respect the package's internal tracking.

Q: Can I require a minimum time before manual completion is available?
Not natively. Consider using an e-learning package with timed slides if time-based completion is required.

Q: What happens if an e-learning package doesn't send completion?
The Item remains incomplete. Check the package is properly configured to communicate with the LMS (SCORM/xAPI settings).

Q: Can learners un-complete an Item?
No, learners cannot undo their own completions. Admins can reset completions if needed.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Solution

Issue

Solution

Completion not recording

Check the completion method is correctly configured. For e-learning, verify package settings.

E-learning shows complete but Learn Amp doesn't

Check SCORM/xAPI communication. Review package completion criteria.

Automatic completion not triggering

Ensure the Item is set to Automatic, not Manual. Clear cache and try again.

Mark as Complete button not appearing

Verify the Item is set to Manual completion. Check learner has viewing access.

Task not completing when Item completes

Confirm the Task is linked to the correct Item and hasn't been manually overridden.

Completion notifications not sending

Check notification settings on the Item. Verify recipient email addresses are correct.

Score not appearing for e-learning

Ensure the package is configured to report scores. Check SCORM/xAPI communication logs.
