Linking Skills to Items

Linking skills to Items allows you to track skill development as learners complete content. When a learner completes an Item with linked skills, their progress towards those skills is automatically recorded, providing valuable insights into capability development across your organisation.

This feature supports competency frameworks, learning pathways, and skills-based reporting.

1. Create or select skills – Define the skills in your company's skill library

2. Link skills to Items – Associate relevant skills with learning content

3. Track development – When learners complete the Item, skill progress is recorded

4. Report on progress – View skill development across individuals and teams

• Competency tracking – Monitor skill development against defined frameworks

• Learning pathways – Guide learners towards content that builds specific skills

• Gap analysis – Identify skill gaps and recommend relevant learning

• Reporting – Generate reports on skill development across the organisation

• Content discovery – Help learners find content related to skills they want to develop

To link skills to Items, you must have one of the following roles:

• Owner – Full access within their company

• Admin – Administrative access within their company

• Learning Designer – Can create and manage learning content

• Curator – Can curate and manage content

• Skills must be created in the Skills area before they can be linked to Items

• The company must have the Skills feature enabled

1. Click the + Create button in the sidebar navigation

2. Select Item and choose your Item type

3. Complete the Key Details step

4. In the Completion step, find the Skills section

5. Click to add skills

6. Search for and select the relevant skills

7. Continue with the remaining setup steps

8. Click Submit to save

2. Click the three-dot menu and select Edit

3. Go to the Completion step

4. In the Skills section, click to add skills

5. Search for and select the skills to link

6. Save your changes

3. Find the linked skill you want to remove

4. Click the remove/X button next to the skill

5. Save your changes

• Be specific – Link skills that are directly developed by the content

• Limit quantity – Focus on 2-5 core skills per Item for meaningful tracking

• Consider levels – Match content difficulty to skill levels where applicable

• Think about pathways – Consider how Items combine to build comprehensive skills

• Use existing skills – Search for skills before creating new ones to avoid duplicates

• Standardise naming – Follow consistent naming conventions across your skill library

• Review periodically – Audit skill links to ensure they remain relevant

Q: What happens when a learner completes an Item with linked skills?
The learner's profile is updated to reflect progress towards those skills. This data appears in skill reports and the learner's skill profile.

Q: Can I link the same skill to multiple Items?
Yes! This is encouraged. Multiple Items can contribute to the same skill, allowing learners to develop skills through various content types.

Q: Do skills affect Item recommendations?
Yes, skills can influence "More Like This" recommendations and content discovery, helping learners find related content.

Q: Can learners see which skills are linked to an Item?
Yes, linked skills are displayed on the Item page, helping learners understand what capabilities they'll develop.

Q: What happens if I remove a skill from an Item?
Existing completion records and skill progress are preserved. The change only affects future completions.

Q: Can I bulk-link skills to multiple Items?
Currently, skills must be linked to Items individually. Consider using the bulk import feature if you need to set up many skill links at once.
