Organising Learnlists with Sections
Overview
Sections allow you to group content within a Learnlist into logical categories, making longer learning journeys easier to navigate and understand. Instead of presenting learners with a flat list of items, you can organise content into meaningful chunks like "Introduction", "Core Concepts", "Practice Exercises", and "Assessment".
This feature is particularly valuable for comprehensive courses, onboarding programmes, or any Learnlist with multiple distinct topics or phases.
Functionality Breakdown
When you add sections to a Learnlist:
Content is grouped under named headings in the sidebar
Learners can see the overall structure at a glance
Navigation becomes clearer, especially for longer Learnlists
Each section can contain multiple items of any type
Section Characteristics

Ordering | Sections appear in the order you set them |
Content types | Any content type can be placed in any section |
Completion | Section completion is based on completing all items within it |
Structure types | Works with Unlocked and Locked structures |

When to Use Sections
Recommended Scenarios
Comprehensive courses with 10+ items covering multiple topics
Onboarding programmes with distinct phases (Week 1, Week 2, etc.)
Certification paths requiring structured progression
Compliance training with multiple modules
When Sections May Not Be Needed
Short Learnlists with fewer than 5 items
Content collections without a logical grouping
Resource libraries where browsing is preferred
Unordered Learnlists (sections won't display)
💡 Tip: A good rule of thumb is to use sections when your Learnlist has 3 or more distinct topics or phases that learners need to work through.
FAQs
Q: Do sections work with all Learnlist structures?
Sections are visible in Unlocked and Locked Learnlists.
Q: Can I have items outside of any section?
Yes. Items that aren't placed in a section appear at the bottom of the Learnlist, after any sections.
Q: Is there a limit to how many sections I can create?
There's no hard limit, but we recommend keeping sections meaningful and manageable. Typically, 3–7 sections works well for most Learnlists.
Q: Can learners skip between sections?
In Unlocked Learnlists, yes—learners can navigate freely. In Locked Learnlists, learners must complete items in order, including completing one section before accessing the next.
Q: What happens to section names in translations?
Section names can be translated along with other Learnlist content. Each language version can have appropriately localised section names.
Q: Can I duplicate a Learnlist with its sections?
Yes. When you duplicate or mirror a Learnlist, the section structure is preserved.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
Can't add a section | Ensure you have edit permissions for the Learnlist. |
Items appearing in wrong section | Use Re-order Learnlist to drag items into the correct section. |
Section order not saving | Refresh the page and try again. |
Deleted section removed my content | Content is moved to the unsectioned area when a section is deleted. Use Re-order to find and reassign items. |
