Organising Learnlists with Tags and Categories
Overview
Tags and Categories help you organise your Learnlists and make them easier for learners to discover. While both serve organisational purposes, they work differently: Tags are flexible keywords for filtering and search, while Categories provide a hierarchical structure for browsing.
Well-organised content improves the learner experience and increases engagement with your learning materials.
Functionality Breakdown

Creating Effective Tags
When creating tags:
Be consistent: Use the same tag name across content (e.g., always "Leadership" not sometimes "Leaders")
Be specific: "Project Management Fundamentals" is more useful than just "Management"
Think like a learner: What would someone search for to find this content?
Don't over-tag: 3-7 relevant tags is usually sufficient
Review existing tags: Check what tags already exist before creating new ones
FAQs
Q: How many tags should I add to a Learnlist?
Aim for 3-7 relevant tags. Too few makes content hard to find; too many dilutes the tag's usefulness.
Q: Can I use the same tag on different content types?
Yes! Tags work across Learnlists, Items, Quizzes, Events, and more. This helps learners find related content regardless of type.
Q: What's the difference between tags and search keywords?
Tags are explicit labels you add for organisation. Learn Amp also searches the Learnlist name, description, and content for search purposes.
Q: Can learners see tags?
Yes. Tags are typically displayed on Learnlist tiles and overview pages, and learners can filter by tags.
Q: How do I create a new category?
Categories are typically managed by administrators through the Settings area. Contact your admin if you need new categories.
Q: Can a Learnlist be in multiple categories?
This depends on your configuration. Some setups allow multiple category assignments; others use a primary category only.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
Can't create new tags | Your company may restrict tag creation to administrators. Contact your admin or use existing tags. |
Tags not helping discoverability | Ensure tags are relevant and match what learners search for. Check spelling and consistency. |
Category section not visible | Categories may not be enabled for your company or you may not have permission to assign them. |
Too many similar tags | Work with your admin to consolidate duplicate or similar tags (e.g., merge "Leadeship" typo with "Leadership"). |
Learners not finding content | Review your tagging strategy. Consider adding more specific or broader tags as appropriate. |
