Managing Custom URL Slugs for Learnlists
Overview
Every Learnlist in Learn Amp has a unique URL slug—a human-readable identifier that appears in the web address. By default, slugs are generated automatically from the Learnlist name, but you can regenerate them to create cleaner, more memorable URLs.
Custom URL slugs improve shareability, make links easier to remember, and can benefit search engine optimisation (SEO).
Functionality Breakdown
What is a URL Slug?
A URL slug is the part of a web address that identifies a specific page. For example:
https://yourcompany.learnamp.com/learnlists/introduction-to-project-management
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This is the slugHow Slugs Are Generated
Automatic generation: When you create a Learnlist, Learn Amp automatically creates a slug from the name
URL-friendly format: Spaces become hyphens, special characters are removed, and text is lowercased
Uniqueness: Each slug must be unique across your platform
When to Regenerate Slugs
Consider regenerating a slug when:
You've significantly renamed the Learnlist and the old slug no longer makes sense
The original slug is very long or contains unnecessary words
You want to optimise for search engines with specific keywords
You're sharing the URL externally and want it to look professional
Slug Persistence
Old slugs: When you regenerate a slug, the old URL may no longer work
Bookmarks: Users who bookmarked the old URL will need the new link
External links: Update any external references to the Learnlist

Use relevant keywords | Include dates or version numbers (unless important) |
Make slugs easy to read and type | Use abbreviations that aren't widely understood |
Regenerate after major name changes | Regenerate frequently (breaks existing links) |
FAQs
Q: Can I manually type a custom slug?
No. Slugs are automatically generated from the Learnlist name. To get a specific slug, name your Learnlist accordingly before regenerating.
Q: What happens to the old URL after regenerating?
The old URL typically stops working. Users visiting the old link may see an error. Update any external references to use the new URL.
Q: Will internal links update automatically?
Links within Learn Amp (such as in Channels or Tasks) should continue to work as they use internal identifiers. External links and bookmarks need manual updating.
Q: Can two Learnlists have the same slug?
No. Slugs must be unique. If a conflict occurs, Learn Amp will append numbers to make the slug unique.
Q: Does changing the name automatically change the slug?
No. Once created, the slug remains the same even if you rename the Learnlist. You must explicitly regenerate it.
Q: Why can't I see the regenerate option?
This option only appears when editing in the company's default language and for existing (saved) Learnlists.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
Can't find regenerate slug option | Ensure you're editing in the default language and the Learnlist has been saved at least once. |
Old URL still working after regeneration | Clear your browser cache. Old URLs may be cached briefly. |
Slug has numbers appended | Another Learnlist has the same base slug. Numbers ensure uniqueness. |
Users getting errors on old links | Share the new URL with affected users. Consider updating any external documentation. |
Want a very specific slug | Name the Learnlist with exactly the words you want in the slug before regenerating. |
