Duplicating an Exercise

Duplicating an Exercise

Overview

Duplicating an Exercise allows you to create a copy of an existing exercise with the same settings and structure. This is particularly useful when you need similar exercises for different content items or want to reuse a well-designed exercise template.

When you duplicate an exercise, it creates a new exercise linked to a different item, preserving most settings while resetting certain fields to ensure the duplicate is ready for use.

Functionality Breakdown

When you duplicate an exercise:

  • A new exercise is created with the same name, description, and most settings

  • The exercise is linked to a new item (specified during duplication)

  • Scoring type is reset to Pass/Fail (regardless of the original scoring type)

  • Completion type is adjusted if needed (if originally set to "Submission Scored", it's changed to "Any Submission")

  • Notification settings are duplicated, but Notify Selected is disabled

  • If notification settings include manager, coach, or manager's manager notifications, those remain enabled

  • All submission requirements (attachments, notes, self-recording) are preserved

  • Sign-off settings are preserved

Note: Exercise duplication typically occurs automatically when you duplicate an item that has an associated exercise. The duplicate exercise will be linked to the new item.

Pre-requisites

To duplicate an exercise, you must:

  • Have permission to create exercises

  • Have an existing exercise to duplicate

  • Have a target item to link the duplicate exercise to

FAQs

Q: Can I duplicate an exercise without duplicating the item?

A: Exercise duplication is designed to work alongside item duplication. If you need a standalone duplicate, you can duplicate the item and then unlink the exercise if needed.

Q: What happens to existing submissions when I duplicate an exercise?

A: Submissions are not duplicated. The new exercise starts fresh with no submissions.

Q: Can I duplicate a scoring rubric along with the exercise?

A: Scoring rubrics are not automatically duplicated. If your exercise uses a scoring rubric, you'll need to either use the same rubric (if it's shared) or create a duplicate rubric separately.

Q: Why is the scoring type reset to Pass/Fail?

A: This ensures the duplicate exercise is ready for immediate use without complex scoring configurations that might need adjustment for the new context.

Q: Can I edit the duplicate exercise immediately after creation?

A: Yes, you can edit the duplicate exercise just like any other exercise. Navigate to Manage → Learning Content → Exercises in the sidebar navigation to find and edit it.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Solution

Issue

Solution

Duplicate exercise not appearing

Check that "Duplicate exercise" option was selected during item duplication. Verify the new item exists and has the exercise linked.

Scoring type is wrong

The scoring type is intentionally reset to Pass/Fail. Edit the exercise to change it to your preferred scoring method.

Notification settings not working

Check that "Notify Selected" is disabled and ensure other notification options (manager, coach) are enabled if needed.

Exercise not linked to new item

Verify the item duplication completed successfully. You may need to manually create an exercise if duplication failed.
