Overview

This glossary provides definitions of key terms and concepts used throughout Learn Amp. Use this as a quick reference guide to understand the platform's terminology.


Content Hierarchy

Learn Amp organises learning content in a three-level hierarchy:

Learning Content Types

Item

An Item is the foundational unit of learning content in Learn Amp. Items can be various types:

Written Content:

  • Article – Text/HTML content for reading

  • Document – Downloadable PDFs, Word docs, PowerPoint presentations

  • Book – Longer-form reading material, multi-chapter content, ebooks

Audiovisual Content:

  • Video – Video files or embedded players (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.)

  • Audio – Podcasts, audio files, sound recordings

  • E-learning – SCORM/xAPI packages, interactive learning modules

  • Infographic – Visual information graphics

  • Slides – Presentation slides

Activity Content:

  • Project – Project-based learning activities

  • Classroom – Instructor-led classroom sessions

  • Coaching – One-on-one coaching sessions

  • Webinar – Live or recorded web seminars

  • Action – Offline activities to be completed

Assessment Content:

  • Test – Knowledge assessments

  • Q&A – Question and answer format

Other:

  • Link/Website – External websites and third-party resources

  • Announcement – Company announcements

  • Newsletter – Newsletter content

Learnlist

A Learnlist is a curated sequence of learning content - think Spotify-style playlists, but for learning. Learnlists help guide learners through a structured journey or course, combining different content types into one cohesive experience.

Key Features:

  • Structure Types:

    • Ordered – Items shown in sequence but learners can skip around

    • Locked – Items must be completed in strict order

  • Completion Tracking:

    • Absolute – Once complete, stays at 100% even if content is added later

    • Dynamic – Completion adjusts when new items are added

  • Pass Scores – Optional scoring thresholds for learnlists which contain assessments

  • Summary Pages – Display learner progress and achievements at the end

  • Certificates – Award certificates upon completion

  • Additional Recommended Content – Optional extras that don't affect completion

  • Sections – Group items into logical sections within a learnlist

Channel

A Channel is the broadest container in Learn Amp's content hierarchy. It can include multiple Learnlists, standalone Items, Quizzes, Surveys, and Events—think of it as a category or topic area.

Channel Features:

  • Contains Items, Learnlists, Quizzes, Content Surveys, and Events

  • Supports ordered, locked, or locked-until-tasked structures

  • Completion tracking (absolute or dynamic)

  • Discussion and Q&A support

  • Certificate auto-assignment


Assessment Content

Quiz

A Quiz is a knowledge assessment tool. Quizzes contain questions that test learner understanding and can be:

  • Added to Learnlists and Channels

  • Configured with pass scores

  • Set with time limits

  • Used for compliance verification

  • Auto-generated from content using AI (Volt)

Question Types:

  • Multiple Choice – Select one or more correct answers

  • True/False – Binary choice questions

  • Yes/No – Binary choice questions

  • Drag and Drop – Match items by dragging

Question Bank

A Question Bank is a reusable pool of quiz questions. Question banks allow you to:

  • Create collections of questions organised by topic

  • Randomly select questions from the bank for each quiz attempt

  • Reuse questions across multiple quizzes

  • Specify how many questions to pull from each bank

Survey

A Survey collects feedback, opinions, or self-assessments from learners. Unlike quizzes, surveys don't have right/wrong answers.

Question Types:

  • Free text

  • Opinion scale

  • Poll

  • Radio button (single choice)

  • Dropdown

  • Multiple choice

Survey Uses:

  • Learner feedback

  • Pulse surveys

  • 1-to-1 meeting preparation

  • Post-training evaluation

Exercise

An Exercise is a practical task attached to an Item that requires learner submission. Exercises enable hands-on learning and skill demonstration.

Exercise Features:

  • Attachment Requirement – No attachment, optional, or required

  • Self-Record – Learners can record video/audio submissions

  • Scoring Types:

    • Pass/Fail

    • Scoring assessment (rubric-based)

    • No assessment

  • Completion Types:

    • Any submission is made

    • Submission scored

    • Manual sign-off

    • Pass score required

  • Sign-off – Can require sign-off from managers, coaches, or specific users


Events

An Event represents scheduled learning activities such as workshops, webinars, classroom sessions, or training days.

Event Features:

  • Event Sessions – Multiple sessions/dates for the same event

  • Enrollment – Learner sign-up and capacity management

  • Waitlists – Automatic waitlist when sessions are full

  • Reminders – Automated notification reminders

  • Attendance Tracking – Mark attendance and completion

  • CPD Points – Award continuing professional development points

Enrollment Types:

  • Selected Sessions – Learners choose which session to attend

  • All Sessions – Learners must attend all sessions

  • Unscheduled – Events without fixed dates to gather interest


User Organisation

Team

A Team groups users together, typically representing departments, locations, or functional groups. Teams are used for:

  • Visibility control (who can see what content)

  • Task assignment

  • Reporting and analytics

  • Manager relationships

Team Types:

  • Standard – Traditional organisational teams

  • Social – Community-focused teams with social features

Team Privacy:

  • Public – Visible to all users

  • Private – Visible to members only

  • Secret – Hidden from non-members

Advanced Grouping

An Advanced Grouping is a dynamic audience defined by filter rules. Advanced groupings automatically include users who match specified criteria.

Use Cases:

  • Target content to specific user segments

  • Assign tasks to dynamic audiences

  • Create reports for specific populations

  • Automate user inclusion based on profile data

Features:

  • Filter by custom fields, teams, locations, roles, etc.

  • Automatic refresh at configurable intervals

  • AND/OR filter logic

  • Real-time user count


Content Organisation and Skills Taxonomy

Tag

Tags are keywords that help categorise and make content searchable. Tags:

  • Apply to Items, Learnlists, and other content

  • Improve content discoverability

  • Recommendations for tags can be auto-generated by AI

Skill

A Skill represents a competency or capability that can be:

  • Associated with learning items and events

  • Associated with learnlists and channels, via the items and events they contain

  • Organised into categories

  • Assigned to users

  • Tracked for development

  • Linked to job roles

  • Used for skills gap analysis

  • Also known as Topics, when the Skills feature is not enabled.

Skill Features:

  • Skill Categories – Group related skills

  • Skill Levels – Rate proficiency levels

  • Skill Associations – Link related skills together

  • AI-generated skill tags on content

Roles (Skills Role)

A Role represents an occupration or job position within the organisation. Roles,

  • Have associated required skills

  • Can define skill level requirements

  • Support career path hierarchies (advancement paths)

  • Help users understand skill gaps for target roles

Roles Features:

  • Role Categories – Group related roles

  • Key Responsibilities – Define role expectations

  • Primary Role – User's current role

  • Target Role – User's desired role for career development

Opportunity

An Opportunity is an internal mobility posting. Opportunities:

  • Define required occupations and skills

  • Show skill match percentage for users

  • Can require verification by specific individuals

  • Enable internal career mobility


System Roles

Learn Amp has several user system roles with different permissions:

Manager Role:
Managers have additional permissions to:

  • View team members' progress

  • Assign tasks to direct reports

  • Access team reporting

  • Conduct 1-to-1 meetings

  • Sign off on exercises

Secondary Manager:
A user who has manager-like permissions for a team without being the primary manager.


Tasks & Assignments

Task

A Task is an assignment of learning content to users with a deadline. Tasks can be:

  • Assigned to individuals, teams, or advanced groups

  • Mandatory or optional

  • Recurring (repeat on schedule)

  • Tracked for completion status

Task Statuses:

  • Pending – Not yet started

  • Started – In progress

  • Completed – Finished

  • Overdue – Past deadline but incomplete

  • Expired – No longer active

Taskable Content:

  • Items

  • Learnlists

  • Channels (Carousels)

  • Quizzes

  • Surveys


1-to-1s

1-to-1

A 1-to-1 is a scheduled meeting between a manager (reviewer) and team member (reviewee). 1-to-1s support:

  • Talking points and action items

  • Note-taking

  • Linked surveys

  • Progress tracking

  • Objectives review

  • Task discussion

1-to-1 Statuses:

  • In Progress – Meeting is active

  • Finalised – Meeting is complete

  • Overdue – Past deadline but not finalised

1-to-1 Template

A 1-to-1 Template defines the structure and default content for 1:1 meetings. Templates can include:

  • Default talking points

  • Default action points

  • Linked surveys

  • Standard notes

Cycle

A Cycle schedules recurring 1-to-1s or surveys. Cycles define:

  • Recurrence frequency (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.)

  • Assigned recipients (individuals, teams, or company-wide)

  • Deadline rules

  • Start dates

Talking Point

A Talking Point is a discussion topic for a 1-to-1 meeting. Talking points:

  • Can be added by either party

  • Come from templates or created ad-hoc

  • Track completion status

Action Point

An Action Point is an action item arising from a 1-to-1 meeting. Action points:

  • Have assignees

  • Track completion status

  • Can carry forward to future meetings


Objectives & OKRs

Objective

An Objective is a goal that users work towards. Learn Amp supports OKR (Objectives and Key Results) methodology.

Objective Levels:

  • Self-development – Personal growth goals

  • Individual – Assigned by managers

  • Team – Team-wide objectives

  • Company – Organisation-wide objectives

Objective Features:

  • Start and end dates

  • Status tracking (Not Started, On Track, Behind, At Risk)

  • Parent/child alignment (golden thread)

  • Progress percentage

  • Notes and comments

Key Result

A Key Result is a measurable outcome that indicates progress towards an objective. Key results have:

  • Completion Types:

    • Self-certify (percentage-based)

    • Pass score (numeric target)

    • Maintain (keep within range)

  • Target values (from/to)

  • Current result tracking

  • Individual ownership

  • Status indicators


Community & Engagement

Discussion

A Discussion is a comment or conversation thread on learning content. Users can post discussions on:

  • Items

  • Learnlists

  • Channels

  • Events

Discussions enable social learning and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing.

Q&A

Q&A (Questions & Answers) allows learners to ask questions about content and receive answers from experts or peers. Unlike discussions, Q&A is specifically for question-answer format exchanges.
