Channels
Overview
Channels are Learn Amp's most flexible way to organise and present learning content. Think of them like Netflix channels—curated collections of Items, Learnlists, and resources grouped around a theme, topic, or purpose.
Channels appear on learners' homepages, making them perfect for:
Structured onboarding programmes
Role-specific training collections
Company news and updates
Self-directed learning libraries
Compliance and mandatory training
Unlike Items and Learnlists, Channels aren't searchable in the Library—they're designed to surface content directly on the homepage based on visibility settings and assignments.
Functionality Breakdown
Channels give you fine-grained control over how content is presented and consumed:
Visibility Options
Setting | Behaviour |
|---|---|
Hidden | Only visible to Owners, Admins, and the creator—useful while building |
Selected | Appears only for specific users, teams, or groups you assign |
Everyone | Visible to all users on their homepage |
💡 Tip: When assigning to teams, you can enable "Also make visible to sub-teams" to automatically include all teams beneath your selected teams in the hierarchy.
Structure Options
Structure | Behaviour |
|---|---|
Ordered | Content appears in sequence but can be completed in any order |
Locked | Content must be completed sequentially—Item A before Item B |
Locked until tasked | Entire Channel is locked until assigned as a Task |
Completion Calculation
Type | Behaviour |
|---|---|
Absolute | Once completed, score stays at 100% even if new content is added |
Dynamic | Score adjusts when new content is added—learners must complete new items |

FAQs
Q: What's the difference between a Channel and a Learnlist?
Learnlists are smaller, focused collections that can be nested inside Channels. Channels are broader containers that can hold multiple Learnlists and Items. Think of Channels as the shelf and Learnlists as the books.
Q: Can I add sections to a Channel?
Channels don't have built-in sections like Learnlists do. However, you can use Learnlists within your Channel to create logical groupings of content.
Q: Where does new content appear when I add it to a Channel?
You choose! When creating or editing a Channel, select whether new content appears at the front (great for news updates) or the back (better for sequential training).
Q: Can learners search for Channels in the Library?
No. Channels only appear on the homepage based on visibility settings. Use Learnlists or Items if you need content to be searchable.
Q: What's the difference between Absolute and Dynamic completion?
With Absolute, once a learner completes the Channel, their score stays at 100% forever—even if you add more content. With Dynamic, adding new content drops their score until they complete the new items.
Q: The drag and drop feature for reordering isn't working—how do I fix this?
Try refreshing your browser or clearing your cache. If the issue persists, check that you have edit permissions for the Channel. Some browsers may have compatibility issues—try Chrome or Firefox.
Q: Can I duplicate a Channel?
Yes! You can either Mirror it (changes to the original affect the copy) or Duplicate it (creates an independent copy with cloned items).
Q: How do I notify someone when a Channel is completed?
In the Channel settings, you can configure completion notifications to alert managers, coaches, or specific users when learners finish.
Q: Can I assign a Channel to sub-teams automatically?
Yes. When setting visibility to "Selected" and choosing teams, enable "Also make visible to sub-teams" to include all teams beneath your selected teams in the hierarchy.
Q: Can I make changes to multiple Channels at once?
Yes! Use batch actions from Manage Channels to change structure, visibility, add tags, duplicate, or delete multiple Channels simultaneously.
Q: How can I let someone edit a Channel without making them an Admin?
Assign them as an Editor on the specific Channel. Editors can update content and settings without needing broader content management permissions.
Q: Can I attribute a Channel to someone who isn't a platform user?
Yes! Use External Contributors to credit guest experts, consultants, or partners who created content but don't have platform access.
Q: How do learners report problems with Channel content?
Learners can use the "Report an issue" option on content to flag broken links, completion problems, or inappropriate material. Reports go to administrators for review.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
Channel not appearing on homepage | Check visibility settings. If set to "Hidden" or "Selected", learners won't see it unless assigned. |
Learners can't access locked content | Ensure previous items are marked complete. Check the Channel structure is set to "Locked". |
Completion percentage not updating | If using Absolute completion, scores won't change when content is added. Switch to Dynamic if you need scores to update. |
Can't reorder Channel content | Verify you have edit permissions. Try refreshing the browser or using Chrome/Firefox. |
New content appearing in wrong position | Edit the Channel and check the "New content appears at" setting. |
Mirror Channel not syncing | Mirror Channels sync for structural changes (add/remove items) but not for individual item edits. |
Can't add Dynamic Learnlist to Absolute Channel | Absolute Channels only accept Absolute Learnlists, and vice versa. Match the completion types. |
Sub-team members can't see Channel | Check that "Also make visible to sub-teams" is enabled in the Channel's visibility settings. |
Archived Channel not visible | Use the Archived filter in Manage Channels to view and restore archived Channels. |
Content issue reports piling up | Check Content Issues regularly in the admin area to address learner-reported problems. |
