Deleting an Exercise Submission
Admins and Owners can permanently delete individual exercise submissions directly from the exercise logs. This is useful when a submission has been submitted in error, or when you need to remove incorrect or test data from your records.
What Deletion Removes
When you delete an exercise submission, the following is permanently removed:
The submission itself (the submitted document or response)
The submission record and any associated scoring
All notes and comments linked to that submission
⚠️ Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. There is no way to recover a deleted submission once confirmed.
Role Requirements
Only the following roles can delete exercise submissions:
Role | Can Delete Submissions |
|---|---|
Owner | Yes |
Admin | Yes |
Learning Designer | No |
Curator | No |
Reporter | No |
Learner | No |
How to Delete an Exercise Submission
Navigate to Exercises in the sidebar.
Open the exercise whose submission you want to delete.
Go to the exercise log for that exercise (the submissions table).
Find the submission you want to remove. If the learner has multiple attempts, expand their row to view all attempts and locate the specific one.
Click the actions menu (⋮) on the right-hand side of the submission row.
Select Delete submission from the dropdown.
A confirmation modal will appear. Review the details carefully — the modal will show the exercise name and the learner's name to confirm you have the correct submission.
Click Delete submission to confirm.
💡 You can also delete submissions from the Score Exercises view and from a learner's individual exercise submission history — the same actions menu appears in all these locations.
After Deletion
If the deletion is successful, you will see a notification confirming the submission has been deleted, and the submissions list will refresh automatically.
If the deletion fails, you will see an error notification. This can occasionally happen due to a temporary issue — wait a moment and try again. If the problem persists, contact support.
Impact on Completion Status
⚠️ Deleting a submission does not automatically recalculate a learner's completion status. If the submission you delete was the learner's only submission for that exercise, their completion status may still show as completed even though no submission exists. If completion status accuracy is important, review the learner's overall record after deletion and update their completion status manually if needed.
Audit Trail
All submission deletions are recorded in the audit trail. The audit log entry captures:
The name of the exercise
The name of the learner whose submission was deleted
The name of the person who performed the deletion
The date, time, and IP address of the action
This gives you a clear record of who deleted what and when, which is useful for compliance and accountability purposes.
FAQs
Can I recover a deleted submission?
No. Deletion is permanent. Once a submission is deleted, it cannot be restored. Always double-check the confirmation modal before proceeding.
Will the learner be notified when their submission is deleted?
No. Learners are not automatically notified when an Admin or Owner deletes their submission. If you need to communicate this to the learner, you will need to do so separately.
Can I delete a submission if the learner has already been scored?
Yes. Deleting the submission will also remove the associated scoring. However, as noted above, the learner's completion status will not be automatically updated.
Can Learning Designers delete submissions?
No. Only Admins and Owners have permission to delete exercise submissions.
Does deleting a submission affect exports?
Yes. Deleted submissions will no longer appear in any exported exercise submission data.
