What is a Channel and how do I use it?

In this article, you will learn all about Channels and how to use them on the platform.

What is a Channel?

A channel is the broadest way to categorise any number of learnlists and/or items in a collection in order to cover much more comprehensive topics. Channels on the platform are very much like the channels you see on Netflix. This means that users can have a much more enjoyable way to consume content on the platform. Channels can be used to structure content so that users can find it easier to learn more in-depth about broader topics.

How do I create a Channel?

There are a few ways to create a channel:

Method A:

  • In the top navigation bar, select Content > Click on Manage > Select Channels

  • Select Actions > Click on Add Channel

Method B:

  • In the top navigation bar, Click on the + icon > Select Channel

Go through the Creator:

Best Practise: Keep your channel set as ‘hidden’ whilst you are still working on it

Step 1: Name your Channel + set the visibility

  • Enter the title of the channel in the title box

  • Select the visibility of the channel:

Hidden - this content will only be visible to Owners, Admins and the creator

Only visible when assigned - this content will only be visible to users/groups/teams, that had the content assigned as a task

Everyone - this content will be visible to all users

Best Practise: Keep your channel set as ‘hidden’ whilst you are still working on it

Step 2: Add your tags, description and completion details

  • Add the tags you want this channel linked with

  • Add a short description about the channel

  • Select how the completion should be calculated

Absolute - Once a user completes the channel, their progress will be marked at 100% and will not change, even if new content is added to that channel

Dynamic - If new items are added to the channel, users who have previously completed the channel will no longer have a score of 100% until they complete the new items

Step 3: Decide on the structure of the channel

  • Select the structure of your channel

Ordered - The channel can be completed in any order

Locked - The channel must be completed sequentially

Locked until tasked - The channel appears locked until it has been assigned to the user

Step 4: Choose the order of new content and upload the tile image

  • Select how you want new content to appear in the Channel

  • Choose the tile image

Step 5: Extra options

  • Choose if you want to enable any Q&A or Discussions

  • Select whether you want to assign a certificate upon completion

  • Set the permissions (what other users can edit the channel)

Step 6: Complete the creation

  • Once you’re happy with the results, click Add Channel. You’ll receive a screen confirming the creation of the Channel or the creator will close.

  • Depending on the visibility settings you chose, your channel will now be visible on the dashboard.
