Scoring Rubric

Scoring Rubric

Overview

Scoring Rubrics in Learn Amp provide a clear and consistent framework for assessing qualitative responses to exercises—especially where there are no strictly correct or incorrect answers. They ensure fair and transparent evaluation across subjective submissions such as free-text responses, uploaded videos, or creative tasks.

By offering defined criteria and scoring levels, Scoring Rubrics help assessors maintain objectivity and alignment when reviewing learner submissions.

Functionality Breakdown

Scoring Rubrics work as structured grading guides. Admins define key performance criteria ("topic areas") and score ranges ("quality levels") that map out what performance looks like at each level. Each intersection of topic and level contains descriptive guidance, helping assessors apply the rubric consistently.

Rubrics are most useful for:

  • Open-ended or creative responses

  • Peer or manager reviews

  • Skills assessments

  • Providing structured feedback

When in use, rubrics:

  • Are linked to specific exercises

  • Can trigger notifications to reviewers

  • Offer the option to display scoring descriptions to learners, supporting their improvement

  • Can calculate scores automatically or be manually graded, depending on setup

Pass Score Integration

Scoring Rubrics work seamlessly with Exercise pass scores to determine learner completion:

How It Works

  1. Set a Pass Score – When creating an exercise with a linked rubric, define the minimum score required to pass

  2. Automatic Completion – When a learner's submission is scored, the system checks if their total score meets or exceeds the pass score

  3. Pass/Fail Status – Submissions are automatically marked as Passed or Failed based on this threshold

  4. Completion Trigger – If using "Pass Score" completion type, the learner only completes the exercise when they pass

Completion Types

Exercises with Scoring Rubrics support these completion behaviours:

Completion Type

Behaviour

Completion Type

Behaviour

Any Submission

Learner completes upon submitting, regardless of score

Submission Scored

Learner completes once scored, regardless of pass/fail

Pass Score

Learner completes only when score meets or exceeds the pass threshold

Tip: Choose "Pass Score" when you need to ensure learners demonstrate competency before completing an assessment.

FAQs

Q: When should I use a Scoring Rubric instead of a Quiz or Exercise?
Use a Scoring Rubric when you're assessing subjective or qualitative performance—especially where multiple interpretations are valid, and you want to guide assessors to score consistently.

Q: Can learners see their scoring criteria?
Yes—there's an option to display scoring descriptions, which helps learners understand how their submissions will be judged.

Q: Are scores calculated automatically?
You can choose! Scores can be manually reviewed or automatically calculated based on how you configure the rubric.

Q: Can I reuse a rubric for multiple exercises?
Yes. Once created, rubrics can be linked to any compatible exercise without recreating them.

Q: Can I duplicate a rubric?
Yes. Use the Duplicate option from the rubric menu to create a copy with all the same criteria and settings.

Q: What happens when I archive a rubric?
Archived rubrics are removed from active use but preserved for historical reporting. They're unlinked from exercises and can be restored later.
