Duplicating and Mirroring Learnlists
Overview
There are two ways to copy a Learnlist in Learn Amp: Mirroring and Duplicating. While both create a new Learnlist based on an existing one, they behave very differently in terms of content linkage and reporting.
Understanding the difference helps you choose the right approach for reusing content efficiently.
Functionality Breakdown
Feature | Mirroring | Duplicating |
|---|---|---|
Copy method | Creates a reference to the original Learnlist | Clones the Learnlist and its items |
Item behaviour | Items remain linked to the original | Items are fully independent copies |
Changes to original | Reflected in the mirror | Not reflected in the duplicate |
Reporting | Tracked as a single completion (shared items) | Separate completion tracking |
Pre-requisites
You must have access to the Manage Learnlists area
You must have permission to edit or duplicate Learnlists
Role Requirements
Owner – Full access within their company
Admin – Administrative access within their company
Learning Designer – Can create and manage learning content
Curator – Can curate and manage content
Quick Start Guide
Step 1: Navigate to Manage Learnlists
Click Manage in the sidebar
Navigate to Learning Content > Learnlists
Find the Learnlist you want to copy
Click the three dots menu (⋮) beside the Learnlist title
Step 2: Choose Your Duplication Method
You'll see the prompt: "How do you want to duplicate this Learnlist?"
Select one of these options:
Option 1: Create Mirror Learnlist
A mirror Learnlist references the original. This means:
The new Learnlist contains the same items (not copies)
Any changes to the original (renaming, deleting, adding items) automatically update the mirror
The mirror starts with visibility set to Hidden to prevent auto-completion by users who already completed the original
Example:
If the original has 10 items and you delete one, the mirror will also show 9 items.
Use mirroring when:
You want the same content in different places
Consistency across instances is important
You want to avoid duplicate reporting
Option 2: Duplicate Learnlist and Clone Each Item
This creates an entirely new Learnlist with independent copies of all items, including:
Documents
Quizzes
Surveys
Events
E-learning packages
Key difference:
Changes to the original will not affect the duplicated version.
Example:
If you rename an item in the original, the duplicated Learnlist keeps the original name.
Use duplication when:
You want to customise the Learnlist independently
You need separate completion tracking
You're creating a snapshot or archive
Reporting Differences
Scenario | Mirrored Learnlist | Duplicated Learnlist |
|---|---|---|
Completion tracking | Shared—completions count once | Separate—each tracks independently |
User completes both | Progress shared across mirrors | Progress tracked separately |
FAQs
Q: Can I edit a mirror Learnlist without affecting the original?
No. Mirrors share the same items—any changes to items affect all linked Learnlists. To make independent changes, use duplication.
Q: Will mirrored Learnlists clutter reporting with duplicates?
No. Since items are shared, completions are counted only once.
Q: If I duplicate a Learnlist, can I delete an item from one version only?
Yes. The duplicated version is completely independent—edit it freely without affecting the original.
Q: Which method should I use for different audiences?
For the same content shown to different groups: use Mirror. For customised versions: use Duplicate.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
Changes not reflected in mirrored Learnlist | Check that the original Learnlist was actually saved, not just previewed. |
Items missing in duplicated Learnlist | Ensure you selected "Duplicate and clone each item" during the process. |
Reporting shows only one completion | This is expected for mirrored Learnlists—items are shared. |
Mirror auto-completed for users | Users who completed the original will show completion. Set mirror to Hidden initially. |
