Roles (Beta)
Overview
Roles in Learn Amp represent job titles or occupations within your organisation. By defining Roles and linking them to Skills, you create transparent career pathways that empower learners to take ownership of their professional development.
When learners can see what skills are needed for their current role—and for roles they aspire to—they're motivated to close skill gaps through self-directed learning. This clarity drives engagement and builds a skilled, adaptable workforce.
Functionality Breakdown
Roles work as structured career frameworks. Admins define job titles with descriptions, key responsibilities, and associated skills (including required proficiency levels). Learners can then browse available roles, compare their current skills against requirements, and set target roles to guide their development.
Key Components
A Role includes:
Name – The job title (e.g. "Senior Project Manager")
Description – What the role involves
Key Responsibilities – Core duties and expectations
Role Grouping – Grouping for organisation (e.g. "Engineering", "Marketing")
Associated Skills – Skills required for the role, with optional proficiency levels
Career Pathways – Roles this position advances from (e.g. "Senior PM" advances from "Project Manager")

FAQs
Q: What's the difference between a primary role and a target role?
Your primary role is your current job title, typically synced from your HR system. Your target role is a position you're working towards—it's learner-controlled and guides your skill development.
Q: How is the match percentage calculated?
The match score compares your current skill ratings against the required levels for each skill in a role. If a role requires five skills and you meet the required level for three, your match percentage reflects that progress.
Q: Can I have multiple target roles?
No, you can only have one target role at a time. This keeps your development focused. You can change your target role whenever your career goals evolve.
Q: Will setting a target role affect my content recommendations?
Yes! Content recommendations take your target role's skills into account, surfacing learning materials that help you build the capabilities you need.
Q: Can roles be synced from our HR system?
Yes. Roles can be automatically assigned based on job title data from supported HRIS integrations. Contact your Customer Success Manager to configure this.
Q: How do career pathways work?
When creating a role, you can specify which roles it "advances from". This creates visible career ladders that learners can explore, showing clear progression routes.
Q: Can I import roles in bulk?
Yes. Use the CSV upload feature in Manage Roles to create multiple roles at once, including their skills and categories.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
Roles not visible to learners | Ensure the Roles feature is enabled and at least one role category is set as "Featured". |
Match percentage showing 0% | Check that you have rated your skills and that the role has skills with required levels set. |
Can't set a target role | Verify the Roles feature is enabled for your account. Contact your admin if the option is missing. |
Role not appearing in browse | Confirm the role is saved, has a category, and the category is featured. |
Skills not syncing to users | Skills are only auto-added for users with a primary role, not target roles. |
HRIS sync not updating roles | Check your integration settings in Company Settings → People and verify the job title field mapping. |
Career pathway not displaying | Ensure the "Advancing from" field is configured when editing the role. |
