Notifications

Overview

Notifications in Learn Amp keep you informed about everything that matters — from learning assignments and overdue content to mentions, shares, and activity across your organisation. They are designed to surface the right information at the right time, so you never miss an important update.

Learn Amp delivers notifications through two channels:

  • In-app notifications — displayed in a full sidebar panel, accessible from the bell icon in the top navigation bar

  • Email notifications — sent directly to your inbox for key events and reminders

Both channels work together to ensure you stay on top of your learning, tasks, and team activity, whether you are actively using the platform or away from it.

Functionality Breakdown

In-App Notifications

The in-app notifications sidebar is your real-time hub for platform activity. Click the bell icon in the top navigation bar to open a sliding panel on the right side of the screen. A badge on the bell icon shows your current unread count at a glance.

The sidebar organises notifications by time, lets you filter by category using four tabs (All, Assigned, Mentioned, and Priority), and supports search so you can find specific notifications quickly. For full details on how the sidebar works, see the In-App Notifications Sidebar article.

Email Notifications

Email notifications are sent for significant events — such as being enrolled in a channel, receiving a course reminder, or having content assigned to you. Users can manage which email notifications they receive from their notification preferences settings.

Admins can configure email notification settings at an organisational level, including setting up SPF records to ensure emails are delivered reliably.

Notification Categories

Notifications are grouped into categories to help you quickly identify what needs your attention:

  • Assigned — activities where action is required, such as new enrolments, pending items, content to review, and upcoming recurring deadlines

  • Mentioned — social interactions including mentions, shares, comments, Q&A activity, replies, and messages

  • Priority — time-sensitive alerts for overdue content, at-risk items, content due tomorrow, content due within the week, and failed items

Pre-requisites

No additional configuration needed — notifications start working as soon as your account is active.

To manage notification preferences:

  • You must be logged in to your Learn Amp account

  • Access your preferences via the sidebar navigation.

Note: Mark as read / unread actions are not available during impersonation sessions. These actions are blocked to prevent admins from accidentally changing what a user has or hasn't read while troubleshooting on their behalf.

FAQs

Q: Where do I find my notifications?
Click the bell icon in the top navigation bar. This opens the notifications sidebar on the right side of the screen. You can also visit /notifications for the full notifications page, which provides a paginated view of all your notifications.

Q: What is the difference between in-app and email notifications?
In-app notifications appear within the platform in real time and are accessible from the bell icon. Email notifications are sent to your inbox for key events. Both can be managed through your notification preferences. In-app notifications cannot be turned off entirely, but email notifications can be configured per-event type.

Q: Can I choose which notifications I receive?
Yes — you can customise your email notification preferences from your account settings. See the Customising User Notification Preferences article for a full walkthrough.

Q: Why can't I mark notifications as read while impersonating another user?
Mark as read and mark as unread actions are intentionally blocked during impersonation sessions. This prevents admins from accidentally changing what a user has or hasn't read while troubleshooting on their behalf.

Q: How do I know if a notification requires immediate action?
Notifications are colour-coded to indicate urgency. Red icons indicate urgent items such as overdue or failed content. Orange icons indicate warnings such as content due soon. Blue icons indicate action items such as new assignments. See the In-App Notifications Sidebar article for a full colour-coding reference.

Q: Do notifications load all at once?
In the sidebar, notifications use infinite scroll — older notifications load progressively as you scroll down, keeping initial load times fast regardless of how many notifications you have. The full notifications page at /notifications uses traditional pagination instead.

Q: Can I use notifications with a keyboard only?
Yes — notifications in the sidebar are fully keyboard navigable, supporting Learn Amp's commitment to accessibility.

Issue

Solution

Bell icon shows no badge but I expect notifications

Check the Unread Only toggle — if it is on, it will hide read notifications. Switch to the All tab and turn the toggle off to see everything.

I am not receiving email notifications

Check your notification preferences in account settings to ensure the relevant email notification types are enabled. Also check your spam or junk folder. If SPF records have not been configured, speak to your admin.

Notifications are not loading in the sidebar

Refresh the page and try again. If the issue persists, clear your browser cache or try a different browser.

I clicked a notification but it took me to an unexpected page

The notification links to the content or action it relates to. If the content has been deleted or moved, the link may no longer be valid. Contact your admin if this happens repeatedly.

Mark as Read option is greyed out

This action is blocked during impersonation sessions. If you are impersonating a user, you will not be able to modify their notification read state.

I cannot see all four notification tabs

All four tabs (All, Assigned, Mentioned, Priority) are always visible in the sidebar. If tabs appear to be missing, check your browser zoom level or try scrolling horizontally within the tab bar.
