Quiz Pass Scores and Attempts
Overview
Quizzes on Learn Amp can be configured with optional pass scores and controlled attempts, giving you flexibility in how you assess learners and manage progression through learning pathways.
This article explains how pass scores work, when to use them, and what happens if a learner exhausts their attempts—especially within locked Learnlists.
Functionality Breakdown
Pass Scores
You can choose whether a Quiz requires a minimum score to be considered complete.
Optional Feature: Not all Quizzes need a pass score.
When enabled: Learners must meet or exceed the pass percentage to progress.
When disabled: Any score counts as completion, even 0%.
Score Validation
Each quiz has a Score Validation toggle that determines whether the pass score is enforced:
Score Validation | Behaviour |
|---|---|
Enabled | Learner must achieve the pass score to pass the quiz. If they score below the pass score, the quiz is marked as failed. |
Disabled | All completed quizzes are marked as passed, regardless of score. Even a score of 0% will be marked as passed. |
💡 Tip: Disable score validation for knowledge checks where you want to track understanding without a formal pass/fail outcome. Enable it when you need to ensure learners demonstrate competency before progressing.
Important: When Score Validation is disabled, you cannot set a pass score. The quiz will pass regardless of the learner's score.
Attempt Limits
Control how many times a learner can retake a Quiz:
Unlimited attempts – Learners can retry as many times as needed.
1 attempt – A single try only.
2 attempts – Up to two tries.
3 attempts – Up to three tries.
How Scores Are Calculated
Understanding how Learn Amp calculates quiz scores helps you set appropriate pass scores and manage learner expectations.
Basic Score Calculation
Quiz scores are calculated as a percentage using this formula:
Score = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100
The result is rounded to the nearest whole number (0-100).
Example:
Quiz has 8 questions
Learner answers 6 correctly
Score = (6 ÷ 8) × 100 = 75%
Multiple Attempts and Scoring
When a quiz allows multiple attempts, you can choose how the final score is calculated:
Best Score – The learner's highest score across all attempts is used
Average Score – The average of all attempts is calculated
Latest Score – Only the most recent attempt counts
What Counts as a Correct Answer
Multiple Choice – The learner must select all correct options and no incorrect options
True/False & Yes/No – The learner must select the correct option
Drag & Drop – All items must be placed in their correct drop zones
Partial Scoring
Learn Amp does not support partial credit for questions. Each question is either fully correct (1 point) or incorrect (0 points).
Recalculating Scores
If you change a quiz's pass score or score validation settings after learners have already taken it, you can recalculate scores for existing attempts:
When editing the quiz, tick the Recalculate quiz user scores checkbox.
Save your changes.
The system will automatically recalculate all existing quiz attempts based on the new settings.
⚠️ Warning: Recalculating scores may change pass/fail status for existing attempts, which could affect learner progression in locked Learnlists.
Pre-requisites
Before configuring pass scores:
Ensure you have permission to create or edit Quizzes.
If the Quiz is part of a locked Learnlist, be aware that learner progression may depend on passing.
Required User Roles
To Create/Edit Quizzes and Configure Pass Scores:
You need one of the following roles:
Curator – Can curate and manage content
Learning Designer – Can create and manage learning content
Owner – Full access within their company
Admin – Administrative access within their company
Additional notes:
Coaches can create Quizzes but may need to be assigned as editors to modify existing Quizzes.
Managers can view Quizzes but need one of the roles above to edit them or configure pass scores.
Users with specific Quiz edit permissions can also access this functionality.
To Manually Mark Quizzes as Complete for Learners:
You need one of the following roles:
Reporter
Learning Designer
HR
Owner
Admin
Additional notes:
Managers with the Allow Mark Complete permission enabled can also manually mark Quizzes as complete for their managed users.
Manually marking a Quiz as complete creates a completion activity for the learner, allowing progression even if the pass score was not met.
Quick Start Guide
1. Choose Whether to Require a Pass Score
When creating or editing a Quiz:
To disable pass requirements: Check No pass score required (Score Validation disabled).
The Quiz will be marked complete regardless of score.
Learners can move on immediately.
You cannot set a pass score when Score Validation is disabled.
To enable a pass requirement: Check Pass score required (Score Validation enabled).
Enter the minimum percentage needed to pass.
Example: A pass score of 60% means learners must score 60% or higher to continue.
If a learner scores below 60%, the quiz is marked as failed.
2. Set the Number of Attempts Allowed
Select how many times a learner can attempt the Quiz:
Unlimited – No cap on attempts.
1, 2, or 3 attempts – Learners can only try the specified number of times.
What Happens if a Learner Fails All Attempts in a Locked Learnlist?
If a Quiz with a required pass score and limited attempts sits inside a locked Learnlist, a learner must pass to move forward.
Example scenario:
Pass score: 60%
Score Validation: Enabled
Maximum attempts: 3
Learner scores 50% on all three attempts
The learner:
Cannot attempt the Quiz again
Cannot progress to the next Learnlist section
The quiz is marked as failed
What happens next?
An Admin can manually mark the learner's Quiz as complete, even though they failed.
This allows the learner to continue through the Learnlist, and the failure is still recorded in reporting for visibility.
FAQs
Do all Quizzes need a pass score?
No. Pass scores are optional—use them only when formal assessment is required. You can disable Score Validation to allow all scores to pass.
What's the difference between Score Validation enabled and disabled?
When Score Validation is enabled, learners must meet the pass score to pass. When disabled, all completed quizzes pass regardless of score, even 0%.
What if a learner barely misses the pass score?
If attempts remain, they can try again. If attempts are exhausted (e.g., in a locked Learnlist), an Admin must intervene to progress them.
Will admins still see that a learner failed if they manually complete the Quiz?
Yes. The completion and the failed score are both visible in reporting.
Can I change the pass score after publishing the Quiz?
Yes, but changes may impact learners currently taking or revisiting the Quiz. Use the "Recalculate quiz user scores" option to update existing attempts.
What happens when I recalculate scores?
All existing quiz attempts are re-evaluated against the new pass score and score validation settings. This may change pass/fail status for some attempts.
Why does my quiz show as incomplete after I already passed it?
Your previous completion may have been expired. This can happen if:
The quiz was archived and then unarchived
An administrator expired your completion
The content has expiry rules that triggered
The quiz is part of a Learnlist or Channel where expiry rules apply
Contact your administrator if you believe your completion should not have expired.
Can expired quiz attempts be restored?
No. Once a quiz attempt is expired, it cannot be restored. The learner would need to take the quiz again as a new attempt.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
A learner cannot progress in a Learnlist | They failed all attempts in a Quiz with Score Validation enabled and a required pass score | An Admin can manually mark the Quiz as complete |
Attempt count isn't working | Quiz settings not saved | Reopen the Quiz, review settings, and save again |
Learner claims score didn't register | Connectivity or timing issue | Ask learner to retake if attempts remain; otherwise review attempt logs |
Score seems incorrect | Partial credit expected | Learn Amp does not support partial scoring – each question is fully correct or incorrect |
Quiz shows as incomplete unexpectedly | Previous completion may have been expired | Check with administrator if expiry rules apply |
Can't set pass score | Score Validation may be disabled | Enable Score Validation to set a pass score |
Scores not updating after changing settings | Recalculate option not used | Tick "Recalculate quiz user scores" when changing pass score or score validation settings |
