Creating a Quiz

Creating a Quiz

Overview

Quizzes in Learn Amp allow you to assess knowledge, reinforce learning, and measure understanding across your teams. They can be used as standalone assessments or embedded within wider learning journeys.

This guide walks you through how to create a Quiz step-by-step, from adding key details to configuring rules and completion settings.

Functionality Breakdown

A Quiz includes:

  • Key Details – Name, timing, images, and tags

  • Question Set – A structured set of questions using different question types

  • Rules – Settings for pass scores, attempts, randomisation, and timers

  • Completion Settings – Optional certificate assignment, CPD points, or custom certificate templates

Pre-requisites

Before creating a Quiz, ensure that:

  • You have permission to create content in your Learn Amp instance

  • You know which question types you want to use

  • Your learning taxonomy and tags are already set up (optional but recommended)

Required User Roles

To create or edit quizzes, you must have one of the following roles:

  • Curator – Can curate and manage content

  • Learning Designer – Can create and manage learning content

  • Owner – Full access within their company

  • Admin – Administrative access within their company

Additionally, Coaches can create quizzes and will automatically become editors of quizzes they create. Users can also be granted Editor access to specific quizzes by the quiz creator or other authorised users.

Quick Start Guide

Step 1: Add Key Details

  1. Select the + icon in the top navigation bar.

  2. Under Assessment, choose Quiz.

  3. Complete the key details:

    • Name – Give your Quiz a clear, descriptive title.

    • Total time – Optional overall time limit.

  4. (Optional) Update your tile image or display image.

  5. (Optional) Add Tags to make the Quiz more searchable.

  6. In Advanced Settings, you can configure:

    • Notifications – Send completion notifications to selected users.

    • Permissions – Add users to the Who can edit? field to allow editing access to others.

    • High Importance Content – Mark the quiz as high importance to prevent accidental edits or deletion (only available to Owners and Admins).

    • External Contributor – If your organisation uses external contributors, you can assign the quiz to an external contributor and display "Added by" information.

💡 Tip: Use the High Importance Content flag for compliance quizzes or critical assessments that shouldn't be changed accidentally.

Step 2: Build Your Question Set

Create or add a Question Set for your Quiz.

  • Add questions individually.

  • Choose from multiple question types.

  • To learn more about question types, see the Multiple Choice Options on Quizzes and Creating a Drag & Drop Quiz articles.

Reordering Questions

Once you've added questions, you can reorder them:

  1. Navigate to your quiz's question management area.

  2. Use the drag-and-drop interface to reorder questions.

  3. The order you set will be the order learners see the questions (unless randomisation is enabled).

💡 Tip: Consider the logical flow of your questions. Start with easier questions to build confidence, or group related topics together.

Step 3: Configure Rules

Set rules that determine how learners complete the Quiz.

  • Randomise questions – Display questions in a different order each time.

  • Set pass score – Decide the minimum score required.

  • Attempts – Choose how many attempts a learner has.

  • Timers – Add a time limit for the full Quiz.

  • Attempt calculation – Decide whether previous attempts should be included when calculating the final score.

For more on timers, see Timers on Quizzes.

How Question Randomisation Works

When Randomise questions is enabled:

  1. The first time a learner starts the quiz, questions are shuffled into a random order

  2. This randomised order is saved for that learner

  3. If the learner retakes the quiz, they see the same order as their first attempt

  4. Different learners see different randomised orders

This ensures fairness across retakes while still providing varied experiences between learners.

Note: If you add new questions to a quiz after a learner has started, the new questions will appear at the end of their existing order.

Step 4: Completion Settings

Choose what happens when learners complete the Quiz.

  • Certificate – Tick the checkbox to automatically assign a Certificate to each learner who completes the item.

    • Certificate Variant – Choose from default certificate colours/styles.

    • Custom Certificate Template – If your organisation has created custom certificate templates, you can select one instead of using the default variant.

    • Certificate Expiry – Configure when certificates expire (exact date, dynamic expiration, or validity periods).

  • CPD Points – If your organisation has CPD enabled, you can award CPD points (formal or informal) upon completion.

  • Notifications – Configure separate notifications for when learners pass vs fail the quiz.

💡 Tip: CPD points are particularly useful for professional development and compliance training where continuing professional development tracking is required.

💡 Tip: Custom certificate templates allow you to brand certificates with your organisation's design, making them more meaningful and recognisable.

Step 5: Recalculating Scores (When Editing)

If you need to change a quiz's pass score or score validation settings after learners have already taken it:

  1. When editing the quiz, tick the Recalculate quiz user scores checkbox.

  2. Save your changes.

  3. The system will automatically recalculate all existing quiz attempts based on the new settings.

⚠️ Warning: Recalculating scores may change pass/fail status for existing attempts, which could affect learner progression in locked Learnlists.

Step 6: Done!

You're all set — your Quiz is ready to publish.

FAQs

Can I edit a Quiz after it's created?
Yes. As long as you have edit permissions, you can update the Quiz at any time. However, if a quiz is marked as High Importance Content, only users with permission to modify high importance content can edit it.

Can I preview a Quiz before publishing?
Yes. Use the preview option to view the learner experience.

Can I reuse questions across multiple Quizzes?
Yes, if your organisation uses Question Banks that can be referenced across items. See Quiz Question Bank for more details.

Will randomisation give learners a different order each time they retake?
No. The randomised order is saved when a learner first starts the quiz. On retakes, they see the same order to ensure fairness.

What happens if I add questions after learners have started?
New questions will appear at the end of the learner's existing question order.

Can I change the order of questions after creating them?
Yes. You can reorder questions at any time using the drag-and-drop interface in the question management area.

What is High Importance Content?
High Importance Content is a flag that prevents accidental edits or deletion of critical quizzes. Only users with permission to modify high importance content can edit or archive these quizzes.

Can I use custom certificate templates?
Yes. If your organisation has created custom certificate templates, you can select one when configuring completion settings. Custom templates allow you to use your own branded certificate designs.

What happens when I recalculate scores?
All existing quiz attempts are re-evaluated against the new pass score and score validation settings. This may change pass/fail status for some attempts.

Can I assign quizzes to external contributors?
Yes. If your organisation uses external contributors, you can assign a quiz to an external contributor and choose to display "Added by" information to learners.
