Creating a Drag and Drop Quiz

Learn how to create an interactive and visual Drag & Drop Quiz in Learn Amp.
A Drag & Drop Quiz allows you to create visually engaging and interactive quiz questions. Instead of traditional multiple-choice or written responses, learners are prompted to drag items (such as images or labels) into specific zones. This is especially useful for testing classification, sorting, or matching concepts — and ideal for visual content.
For example, you might ask learners to sort company values from non-values by dragging each item into the correct category.

Define Drop Zones – the target areas where learners will drag items.
Add Draggable Elements – such as images or icons that users must sort.

Pre-requisites
Before creating a Drag & Drop quiz, make sure you have:
The relevant images ready to upload (background, draggable elements).
A clear idea of the Drop Zones and what goes where.
Permission to create or edit Quizzes in Learn Amp.
Required User Role
To create and configure Drag & Drop quizzes, you must have one of the following user roles:
Curator
Learning Designer
Admin
Owner
Note: Users with the Coach flag enabled can also create quizzes, but this is typically used for coaching-specific content.
Quick-Start Guide
Step 1: Open the Quiz Editor
In the sidebar navigation, go to Manage → Learning Content → Quizzes.
Open an existing quiz and click Editor View in the top toolbar, or create a new quiz — the inline editor opens automatically after you complete the creation form.
From the Question Types sidebar on the right, drag the Drag & Drop card onto the editor canvas, or click the + button between existing questions and select Drag & Drop.
Step 2: Upload Your Background Image
This image sets the visual context for your question. For example, you might use a diagram, labelled image, or any visual you'd like users to interact with.
Example: A branded purple background with boxes labelled "Company Values" and "Not Company Values".
Step 3: Add Drop Zones
These are the target areas where learners will drop their answers.
To add a Drop Zone:
Click to define the area on your background image.
Give the zone a name.
Set the capacity – the maximum number of items allowed in that zone.
Example: Two drop zones titled "Company Values" and "Not Company Values".
Step 4: Upload Draggable Elements
These are the items learners will move into the Drop Zones.
To add:
Upload each item as an image.
Assign each item to the correct Drop Zone for scoring.
💡 Tip: These could be icons, photos, or visual labels representing concepts.
Step 5: Configure Feedback
You can customise the feedback shown to learners based on their answers:
Provide messages for correct and incorrect placements.
Use this to reinforce learning or redirect attention.
Step 6: Save Your Changes
Click Save in the question types sidebar when you are done.
FAQs & Troubleshooting
Can I use text instead of images for draggable elements?
Currently, draggable elements must be image files. You can create labelled image tiles to work around this.
What happens if a learner drops too many items into one zone?
The Drop Zone's capacity will prevent extra items from being dropped beyond the limit you've set.
Can I mix image-based and traditional questions in one quiz?
Yes. You can combine Drag & Drop with other question types within the same quiz.
Troubleshooting Tips
Elements not appearing? Double-check your image uploads and make sure they're properly assigned.
Drop Zones not working? Ensure they've been saved with valid names and capacities.
Quiz not saving? Confirm all required fields (images, zones, feedback) are completed.
Editor View toggle not visible? You may not have edit permissions for this quiz. Ask an Admin or the quiz owner to add you via Who can edit?
